Shingles 2

What is Shingles?

Shingles, also known as Zona, is caused by the varicella zoster virus, often caught during childhood. The virus remains in the body, particularly in lymph nodes and the roots of nerves. Symptoms can appear years after the initial infection, becoming reactivated and spreading throughout the body along the nerve fibers.

What are the symptoms of Shingles?

Warning signs of Shingles include: pain, itching, tingling, numbness, burning sensations and light fever. Then, rashes form: small vesicles along the sensory nerve dry up and form crusts a few days later. This cycle generally lasts between two and four weeks. The regions most afflicted by Shingles are the thorax, back, buttocks and neck. Approximately 10% of Singaporean will develop Shingles at one point in their lives.

What are the risk factors?

As is the case with many infections, people with fragile immune systems are most likely to develop Shingles, such as people over 50, immunocompromised, afflicted with infectious diseases or undergoing medical treatments. Adults that have come into contact with children with chicken pox benefit from better protection against Shingles.
